What to gather before a Self Assessment review
A practical checklist for income, expenses, property, gains and HMRC notices before tax return work starts.
Self Assessment is much easier when the facts are organised before calculations begin. Start with employment income, pension income, dividends, interest, rental records and any self-employed income.
For property or capital gains, keep completion statements, purchase records, improvement invoices and ownership details together. Those records often change the tax answer.
If HMRC has written to you, include every letter and deadline. The filing work and the response strategy may need to be handled together.
